Is Alli a dieter's best friend?
Alli, the first over-the-counter weight loss pill approved by the Food and Drug Administration, is set to hit pharmacy shelves as early as today.
The question is whether Alli -- pronounced "ally"-- will be a friend or foe to dieters.
Local pharmacists and dietitians say there has been heavy interest in Alli, a pill with an unusual marketing strategy. The drug's manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline PLC, launched a Web site, myalli.com, that promotes the drug as "a pill and a plan." It encouraging users to partner it with a reduced fat and calorie diet and healthy exercise plan.
Alli is the over-the-counter version of Xenical, made by Roche Holding. Alli is the first over-the-counter weight loss drug to be deemed safe and effective by the FDA.
Even so, some local health experts worry about the possible side effects associated with the drug, which can include many trips to the bathroom.
"As with any diet plan, it's an environmental change; it's a change in lifestyle," said Kris Conforti, a registered pharmacist at Middletown, Palmyra and Steelton pharmacies. Alli will be available as early as next week in his Palmyra Pharmacy, he said.
"It's not just about the pill; it's about what you eat and how active you are," said Julie Steele, a registered dietitian with PinnacleHealth System.
There has been a lot of interest in Alli among customers at Rhoads Pharmacy in Hummelstown, said David Lutz, owner and pharmacist. It will have the pill in stock tomorrow.
Lutz said many over-the-counter diet pills work by speeding up the body's metabolism, but not Alli, which decreases the absorption of fat into the body.
